September 21, 2010 – Renosol Corporation has introduced a new glass-reinforced polymer technology in its Smart Spring leaf spring. The Smart Spring is intended for use in mid- and heavy-duty truck suspensions, and will weigh roughly 70% less than comparable steel leaf springs.

The Bay County (Michigan) Board of Commissioners granted Renosol a $3.1 million federal bond allocation to be used toward re-configuring its manufacturing plant to produce the Smart Spring. The bonds are financed under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Production of this spring in Michigan represents several benefits. Reduced vehicle weight results in less fuel usage and carbon emissions; but shifting from steel to a composite spring also means lower transportation costs to assembly sites (the closest production of steel leaf springs is currently in Mexico), and greater payload.
